Many of our patients choose to wear contact lenses to correct their vision problems. This convenience comes with some extra work to ensure you maintain healthy eyes while wearing contacts. Our optometrists at Lickteig Family Eye Care provide vision services in Boston, Medford, and Natick. We would like to help you understand the importance of contact lens health awareness.
The Dangers of Contact Lenses
Prescription contact lenses are not entirely without risk. Some of the risks associated with wearing contact lenses include dry eyes, allergic reactions, droopy eyelids, scar tissue build-up, and depriving the eyes of oxygen. Furthermore, some patients experience contact lens intolerance and are unable to continue wearing the lenses.
Infections While Wearing Contact Lenses
Taking improper care of your contact lenses may lead to infections or open sores. If you are experiencing the signs of an infection or discomfort, immediately remove the lenses and call your eye doctor.
Protecting Your Vision
There are several things you should not do when wearing contact lenses to protect your vision. Do not sleep while wearing your contact lenses. Regularly clean your contact lenses. Do not swim while wearing contacts. Lastly, never wear contact lenses that have not been prescribed to you.
Wearing Contact Lenses
The length of time you wear your contact lenses varies from person to person. Ideally, it is not recommended to wear contact lenses from the moment you open your eyes until you close them at night. It is best to wait to put your contact lenses in until after your morning shower and remove them around dinner time. Limited wear gives your eyes a chance to rest and recover from the stress of wearing contact lenses.
